Ponera testacea ist eine Art der Unterfamilie Ponerinae, die als "Variation" von P. coarctata fast in Vergessenheit geraten war. In der hier zitierten Arbeit von Csösz & Seifert (2003) wurde sie in den Artstatus erhoben und, neben P. coarctata, neu beschrieben. Beide Arten kommen in Mittel- und Südeuropa weit verbreitet und auch nebeneinander vor. Alle bisherigen Funde von "Ponera coarctata" müssten nun überprüft werden, ob es sich wirklich um diese Art, oder doch um P. testacea handelt.
